Vodaphone Tracks Holiday Travels

0618vodafone.gifViral Marketing: Also known as Word of Mouth Advertising. Any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, thus creating the potential for exponential growth in the message’s exposure and influence. Just like viruses, such strategies take advantage of rapid multiplication to explode the message to thousands, even to millions.

Vodafone has found a fun way to virally promote their decision to abolish roaming fees in most of Europe, Australia and New Zealand this summer. They’ve launched #ukhols, a website that lets the technically-savvy share their holiday plans for the summer.

Twitter users can use the hashtag #ukhols to share their age, gender, current location, and travel destination, which is then mapped on Vodafone’s Google Maps integration. Slowly but surely, a network of UK travel is growing on the site.

The idea is still catching on. But regardless of whether it gets picked up by the Twitter community at large, it’s garnering plenty of attention for Vodafone. And it’s definitely a great use of modern technology.
