Any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, thus creating the potential for exponential growth in the message’s exposure and influence. Just like viruses, such strategies take advantage of rapid multiplication to explode the message to thousands, even to millions.

Here’s a social advertising campaign that a mall could make its own. Remember Antwerpen Central? Maybe not, but it was featured in a very successful viral video recently. In recent years, the station has been renovated, and it’s being recognized for the stunning piece of architecture it is. To celebrate the completion of the renovation, this website was commissioned (turn down your speakers if you’re in the office).

It brings the station, re-imagined as a work of pixel art, to audiences around the world. Visitors can explore the station, picking up little gems of information and photography as they go.

If your mall has a lot of history, or unique attractions, wouldn’t this be a great way to bring in the curious? If nothing else, it’s an inspiration to think creatively about a web presence. The limitations of what you can do with the web are fading fast.
