Music Goes Global with YouTube

Viral Marketing: Also known as Word of Mouth Advertising. Any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, thus creating the potential for exponential growth in the message’s exposure and influence. Just like viruses, such strategies take advantage of rapid multiplication to explode the message to thousands, even to millions.

You may not be aware of this yet, but YouTube is in the midst of a very cool viral experiment. In November of 2008, the London Symphony Orchestra performed “Eroica,” a symphony composed for YouTube. The website then sought out submissions for each part of the symphony from members of its worldwide community. The result of that search has been posted this week:

Each part was filmed individually and submitted to YouTube, and the winning videos for each part were stitched together into a cohesive whole.

Keep an eye on this one. Yesterday, the winners (selected by members of world-renowned orchestras) were invited to perform the travel to New York and perform the symphony at Carnegie Hall. The resulting video should be posted on the website later today. What a great example of using the crowd to create something beautiful for your brand.
