Microsoft Wants to Take You Back to Basics

Ever feel too connected, like you can’t get away from all the digital distractions that fill our lives? Microsoft hopes so, with its new Windows Phone 7 ad.

It’s an idea that resonates: smart phones give us the ability to check out of everything around us. It’s a short step from checking your email while waiting in the grocery line to browsing the web while jogging. The emotional impact is far more effective than a similarly technophobic ad for Microsoft’s Bing search service. But it makes what seems to be a similar misstep: Windows Phone 7 devices are smart phones. They are capable of providing just as much distraction as an iPhone or Blackberry.

That said, the ad has picked up well over a million views, and that’s got to be a good thing for this new contender in the extremely crowded smart phone market.
