Fighting Human Trafficking Through YouTube
To raise awareness of human trafficking, one group has turned a common YouTube feature on its head.
The Task Force on Human Trafficking has put together a social campaign called WomanToGo. The presentation is somewhat shocking, with a website and fake storefront designed to “sell” real, live women.
The group has released a video to support the campaign. To drive home the point, the video includes a call to action: use YouTube’s “Dislike” button to show that you’re against human trafficking.
Aside from a number of misogynistic jokes in the comments, the attempt has been quite successful. Nearly 10 percent of viewers have joined the petition by disliking the video.
