DEFEAT STEREOTYPES
Viral Marketing: Also known as Word of Mouth Advertising. Any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, thus creating the potential for exponential growth in the message’s exposure and influence. Just like viruses, such strategies take advantage of rapid multiplication to explode the message to thousands, even to millions.
One of the most popular bits of viral marketing currently making the rounds is Microsoft’s new “I’m a PC” campaign. You may have seen the Mac advertisements that portray Windows PCs as slow, frustrating, and over-complicated. In reaction, the “I’m a PC” campaign encourages users to celebrate both their commonalities and their individuality. By asking PC users to submit their own videos to the campaign, Microsoft hopes to inspire pride in its chosen platform.
At Shopping Center Weekly, we use and enjoy both of the major operating systems, but it’s nice to see the long-standing PC/Mac war focus on a little positivity. This is part of a larger campaign to improve Microsoft’s public image, which also features a series of inscrutable ads starring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld.
