Cebu Pacific Dancers Take Off

A little bit of novelty can go a long way toward making the everyday extraordinary. That’s the appeal of a flash mob, or a choreographed wedding processional – the idea of a pleasant surprise that brings a brief interruption to an otherwise routine day gets people’s imaginations going.

That principle has skyrocketed Cebu Pacific Air from an average mid-sized airline in the Philippines to a household name – at least in some corners of the Internet. For one special flight, the airline’s flight attendants completed their safety demonstration while dancing to the sounds of Lady Gaga’s Just Dance (mashed up with Katy Perry’s California Gurls).

A few lucky passengers caught the whole thing on film, and uploaded it to YouTube. In a week, the airline has almost 8 million views and international blog and mainstream news coverage. Most likely, those lucky passengers were in on the whole thing (who aimlessly films an airplane boarding, after all?), but it still seems legitimate enough that people are loving it. Rumor has it, in fact, that Cebu Pacific is considering adding the dance routine to more of its flights, as passengers keep asking to see the dancers.

This is the sort of viral ad one could easily replicate, but we wouldn’t be surprised if there was a very talented marketing team behind this one.
