The Foundry Lights Memorial Tree

1128lightLast weekend, visitors to The Foundry Shopping Centre in Scunthorpe gathered for the most somber of holiday tree lighting events: the 15th annual Light Up A Life memorial.

Each light on the tree is a light of remembrance. Shoppers are asked to send in a donation and the name of a loved one sadly lost, and a light is prepared. The name is recorded in a book of remembrance as well, and the book is put out on display at the shopping center throughout the holiday season. This year’s memorial tree raised over £9,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and Lindsey Lodge Hospice.

The switch-on is a time to celebrate the lives of loved ones, with music, poetry and prayer accompanying the lighting of the tree. Scunthorpe Telegraph has more:

Head of fundraising at Lindsey Lodge, Mel Banham, said the event was the best attended he had seen.

He said: “It’s brilliant that so many people find some kind of solace in a night like this.

“The staff at Macmillan work really hard to make sure it’s not a sad event, and so many people come year after year as a result.

“It’s incredibly helpful for us – it helps keep the hospice running so we want to thank all those who come out and support us.”

The memorial tree was lit up as Jopsox sang “Circle of Life”, with a light representing each person to be remembered.
