Uptown Sends Shoppers on a Thrill Ride

327zipUptown shopping centre was all about adventure for spring break. The Victoria, Canada center opened up the region’s first urban zipline so thousands of families could experience the thrill of flying over the center’s busy Town Plaza.

“We have been overwhelmed with the response to our zipline adventure,” said Roberta Ferguson, general manager, Uptown shopping centre. “Not everyone has the opportunity to travel for spring break so we wanted to create some excitement for families who stay home but still want to do something really different.”

Locals had a taste of the urban zipride fun back in 2010, when it was a big part of the Vancouver Olympic festivities. Four years later, they were ready for more. The dual line took thrill seekers across the plaza at a height of 300 feet. Almost anyone five or older could ride, and the dual line let parents and kids, couples and friends experience the zipline side by side.

Each ride cost $10, half of which was donated to an education fund for baby Iver Benson, a local child whose tragic yet miraculous birth drew media attention nation wide.

“We have so many friends who are coming out to ride the Uptown zipline,” said Courtenay Coffin, a local parent with two children on spring break. “It’s such a cool event for families and it’s supporting a very worthy cause.”
