The Rock Sparkles for the Holidays
Want to add a little sparkle to the holidays? You might be too late – The Rock, Bury is setting out to out-glitter every other center with its holiday lights switch-on.
The center is preparing to light up the world’s biggest disco ball at its event, The Glitter Ball. This thing is huge: 2000 times the size of a standard disco ball, with a stunning eight meter diameter and a 25m circumference. It will be lifted up high above the ground by a 55 ton crane, and lit up with blocks of colorful spotlights. It should light up the holiday season brilliantly.
The center’s other decorations will tie in both the center’s color and Bury’s history. Students from Holy Cross Sixth Form College and University Centre worked with decor specialists to come up with decorations that bring to mind the town’s famous textile industry, with woven banners and shuttles creating weave effect curves.
Vibrant, warm colours from claret and gold to orange and purple will be used to animate the lights, giving the center a warm, cozy glow. And one of the town’s biggest historical inventions, the Flying Shuttle, will be transformed into a decoration for the event.
While the glitter ball rises and the lights are lit, Singer songwriter Kirsty Almeida will perform for shoppers. She’s a rising talent in Britain, and she’ll be performing music from Wintersongs, an album inspired by the magic and darkness of the festive season.
There will also be a snowflake lantern parade, fireworks, and, of course, the arrival of Santa, in a sleigh led by huskies.
