The Palms Takes Inspiration from Speed Dating

Job hunting is rarely fun—usually it falls on the arduous side of things. The Palms Shopping Centre recently took on a challenge to make the process a little more palatable for both employers and job hunters. Its inspiration? Speed dating.

The idea to host a speed employing event was born after center manager Simon Carter noticed many retailers had signs in their windows looking for staff.

“I was trying to think of a fun way for retailers to fill pre-Christmas positions in their stores and speed job interviews seemed like it would be great,” he says. “Like a date, in an interview, you often know straight away if someone is the right fit. We are looking forward to hosting this unique and exciting event and with the prospect of employment – job seekers have nothing to lose!”

A little more formal than a job fair, The Palms Speed Employing event was open to everyone. Hopeful job seekers only had to contact the center to register so the dates—interviews, rather—could be arranged.

The event went off beautifully. Nearly 200 job seekers arrived to meet with employers. The interviews ran like a speed dating event, with a timed five minutes for each candidate to make their case. It was, by all reports, a cheery event.
