The Orchards Goes Gardening

As the adage goes, April showers bring May flowers. Haywards Heath has had more than its fair share of those April showers lately, so The Orchards gave everyone something to look forward to in the flower department. Last weekend’s Strictly Come Gardening event reminded shoppers that the best part of spring is just around the corner.

The first part of the event was an early-season competition for best flower—best flower painting, that is. Mayor John Sabin and a celebrity expert panel gravely considered the paintings of the children of St. Josephs and St. Wilfrids Primary schools. After they picked their winner, an expert panel led by Jean Griffin, BBC Radio Sussex’s gardening guru, answered shoppers’ many gardening questions.

Open Seed Pollination champion Peter Brinch was on hand to explain the virtues of his seeds with a wide selection to buy, while South East Water advised shoppers on how to water wisely. Visitors could also learn how to make a small urban garden a haven for biodiversity, including the opportunity to build for wildlife. There was also plenty to inspire shoppers with exhibits of local gardens.
