Tempe Marketplace Takes Chalk Art Citywide
Last year, Tempe Marketplace held its inaugural Chalk Art Festival. This year, it’s participating in the festival again—but this time it’s gone citywide.
The 2014 Vestar Chalk Art Festival, presented by Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance has spread to three locations at once: Tempe Marketplace, Desert Ridge Marketplace and Westgate Entertainment District. Organizers are encouraging the public to visit all three locations to see the unique murals by local artists.
Each featured mural artist is creating an 8 by 6 foot piece, working with a variety of themes from desert landscapes to cultural inspirations. From 11am to 6pm on Saturday, April 12, thousands of visitors can watch the artists create the works live at the shopping centers. They’ll stay on display through April 30.
Westgate Entertainment District will focus on spring-themed murals, while Tempe Marketplace will showcase college and state monument-themed pieces. Desert Ridge Marketplace will go green with environmentally-friendly themes.
Shoppers can also participate, visiting the Chalk Art Festival KidZone. Welcoming both children and adults, the zone is the place where visitors can create their own original pieces of chalk art or contribute to a large-scale community mural.
