Telford Redevelopment Gets the Go Ahead
Telford is in for big changes, as planning consent has been granted for a £200 million redevelopment strategy that will see its town center transformed, and Telford Shopping Centre nearly doubled in size.
Sovereign Land, which asset manages the center, worked closely with Telford & Wrekin Council to ensure that this major investment project is fully integrated with the local authority’s ambitious vision for the revitalization of the town.
With 400,000 sq ft of new retail, 250,000 sq ft of restaurants, cafés, bars as leisure uses such as cinema and hotel, the five year redevelopment of Telford Shopping Centre – combined with the adjacent £250 million Southwater leisure development due to open Spring 2014 – is set to turn Telford into a retail and leisure destination that will draw visitors from across the region.
“Great things are happening in Telford and our project is a vital part of the council’s wider strategy for creating an exciting new future for one of the UK’s important New Towns,” said Tim Binnington, Chairman of Sovereign Land
“Qur development team – architects Benoy and planning consultants G L Hearn – worked hard to align the masterplan with the Council’s wider strategy and achieve a critical mass that will pull in shoppers and other visitors from across a wider catchment area.”
It’s early days yet—the first phase of development is due to start next spring— but plan is comprehensive. It includes new public squares and evening dining and entertainment options to help support the development of an evening economy, new landmark buildings and more.
