St. Laurent Centre Makes Movie Magic

For three nights this July, St. Laurent Centre, in Ottawa, Canada ,transformed its parking lot into a classic drive-in movie experience. Movie goers were treated to a family, date and action night. Family night saw shopping center visitors enjoying E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and date night brought lovers young and old out to watch Sleepless in Seattle.

On July 28, 148 cars and more than 500 people came out for action night to see Jurassic Park. Visitors got a rare chance to see the Jurassic dinosaurs on the 20′ X 40’screen. According to organizers, many visitors came out on the surprisingly chilly night prepared with blankets and laid out on the bonnet of their cars to enjoy the outdoor show.

The events were planned as a fundraiser, with all proceeds from the $10 per vehicle ticket donation was given to Overbrook-Forbes Community Resource Centre.

We’ve seen these movie nights become more and more popular in recent years, and now many cities are organizing big screen outdoor films in parks and other public facilities too. If you’ve run summer movie nights, have you had more success with charity donations or free nights? And do you find recent popular films more or less successful than modern classics or older films?
