Shops at Wailea Prepares a Street View Treat

For years, Google Street View gave an advantage to outdoor shopping districts. Its Street View cars and vans can’t exactly navigate the indoor hallways of a shopping center. For the past two years or so, however, the Google Street View trike has been wandering and photographing shops and malls.

Google recently took the trike down to Hawaii for its first off-road exploration of the islands. It picked up some beautiful views, some of which you can see on the official Google Blog. It also took a detour into some of the state’s top malls, thanks in part to the centers’ marketing agency, Gilbert & Associates.

The resulting Street View maps are impressive, taking you inside, outside and all throughout the entire centers. But here’s the clever twist: when the Street View team was scheduled to map The Shops at Wailea, it organized a little “easter egg” for the shoot. It brought in three hula girls to dance live for the cameras on the center’s courtyard fountain.

You can see the results in Google Maps. Here’s The Shops at Kukuiula, and here is The Shops at Wailea, starting with the hula girls.
