Help Shoppers Go Green

Starting February of this year, battery producers and sellers in the UK have been subject to the fairly stringent requirements of the EU Battery Directive. The Mall saw this challenge as an opportunity, and has launched a recycling initiative to help all its shoppers improve their ecological footprint.

Starting immediately, The Mall Luton is trialing an end-of-life battery recycling scheme. It has placed highly-visible drop-off bins throughout the center, so shoppers have an easy way to dispose safely of used batteries. To help publicize the initiative, the shopping center is giving free batteries to the first 1000 people who come to the center to recycle their old ones.

The Mall Luton believes that it’s one of the first centers in the UK to offer this service. Does your shopping center offer recycling services for shoppers? Let us know in the comments.

Southgate Shopping Centre in Sydney, Australia offers customers the opportunity to recycle household batteries, wine and champagne corks, and printer ink cartridges in a specially marked “Recycling Centre” located prominently in the common mall area. The batteries are collected and returned to a local business for recycling, while the corks go to local Girl Guides groups who on-sell them to a re-manufacturer as a major fundraising initiative. Ink cartridges are recycled through Planet Ark. The Recycling Centre has been up and running for almost 18 months, and has proven to be a very popular community addition to Southgate. The idea has been replicated at other centres in our portfolio, collecting mobile phones, lightbulbs, plastic bags, among other items.
