Ship in a Shop: A Great New Hobby

As part of a local regeneration and economic development plan, Middleton Grange Shopping Centre is going to be home to a unique art experience over the next few months: a Ship in a Shop, to be precise.

A previously vacant unit has been taken up by the local council as part of the lead up to this summer’s Tall Ship Races in Hartlepool. Between now and August, an artist will be building a glass and steel ship on-site in the shopping center. The artist will be working in full view of the public at the shopping center, but more than that, he’ll be bringing them into the process with community workshops and talks. Early workshops will cover topics like glass design.

The unit will also include an exhibition space for community artwork, and a Tall Ships information center. The shopping center is waiving rent costs on the unit to ensure that the community can focus its funding on enriching local arts and promoting the Tall Ship Races, which are sure to be a great boon for tourism.
