Riverside Shoppers Quilt Olympic Pennants

Olympic fever is growing in London, with just a smidge over a year left to go. As many of the major construction projects reach their final milestones, community groups are starting to get involved.

One of those groups is Quilts4London, a massive community project that plans to create 14,000 pennants to give to the athletes next summer. Irene Heathcote, founder of the project, will be at Riverside Shopping Centre on June 18th to hold a quilting event – the third European Quilting in the Open day.

Quilting groups from around the area, including the U3A quilting group, Hemel Hempstead Quilters and Quilters from Region 7 of The Quilter’s Guild of the British Isles are all joining in. But this isn’t a closed event – shoppers are welcome to join in, and will be given instruction on quilting pennants. They can also purchase do-it-yourself kits to take part with if they don’t already have their own supplies. After all, with 14,000 penants to create, quilters new and old will need to pitch in. But what an awesome welcoming gift for the althetes.

Joanna Hall expects a large turnout for the event, saying “This is a great opportunity for the local community to become involved in a national event.”
