Pickering Town Centre Launches Upscale Farmer’s Market

This week, Pickering Town Centre opened its doors to fresh new experiences with the launch of its brand new Farmer’s Market.

“Our goal is to bring an authentic Farmers’ Market to the community, different from any others that exist in the region,” said Lorna Murphy, marketing director at Pickering Town Centre. “By partnering with such dynamic groups as Durham Sustain Ability, Durham Farm Fresh, Durham West Arts Centre and Pickering Cares, this market will be a contemporary, eco-friendly destination that brings together some of the best that Durham Region has to offer.”

This Farmer’s Market has a big focus on community values, thanks in part to the desires of local shoppers. When the center surveyed its customers, it found that 34 percent of respondents wanted the market to take part in food drives, 30.3 percent wanted to see live entertainment, 44.1 percent were looking for eco-friendly products and 48.6 percent were interested in organic products. So Pickering Town Centre set out to fulfill those wishes.

Each week at the market, the center will collect food donations for local food banks. It has plans for regular live entertainment as well. And Durham Sustain Ability will oversee the environmental aspects of the market and will use the opportunity to educate market visitors in environmental practices they can use in their daily lives.

For the launch, Pickering Mayor David Ryan held a ribbon cutting ceremony. Durham Has Talent finalist Cyann Dias and Durham Tourism’s Songwriting competition winner Matthew Riches both performed.
