Paseo Colorado’s Masterpieces in Chalk

704basquiatOver Father’s Day weekend, Paseo Colorado held the 21st annual Pasadena Chalk Festival. Produced by the Light Bringer Project, it saw nearly 600 astoundingly dedicated and talented chalk artists come to the center to create chalk murals that covered over two city blocks. 100,000 visitors had the chance to shop, dine and enjoy themselves watching the murals come to life over the two-day festival.

Highlight’s of this year’s show included Animation Alley, a chance for some of the top and upcoming animators and graphic designers from Southern California to show off their best. Shoppers could also explore the Chalk of Fame, where they would find chalk murals of famous movie posters. Finally, they could stop at the Artist Gallery to bid on affordable painted canvases created by the artists to benefit the Light Bringer Project, a Pasadena-based non-profit arts organization.

Guests and artists could also enjoy the sounds of live music throughout the weekend, and kids could make Father’s Day cards at Kid’s Chalkland. For Dads looking for a diversion, the center also held the Pasadena Police Classic Car Show on Sunday the 16th.

The artists participating in the Chalk Festival came from Southern California and Beyond, working in styles from classical to contemporary, whimsical to political. They represented many ethnicities and age rangers, and worked both independently and in teams from art schools, museums and cultural centers.

The winners were also a diverse bunch, though one piece, pictured above, claimed many accolades. Moe Notsu’s Basquiat won Best in Festival, 1st place; Paseo Colorado’s People’s Choice, and DDR’s Artist-in-Residence Tom Matousek’s ‘Tom’s Choice’ Award.
