Ocean Terminal Says Goodbye to the HMS Edinburgh
Last weekend Ocean Terminal shoppers had the opportunity to say farewell to a piece of history: the Fortress of the Sea made her final visit to Edinburgh. The HMS Edinburgh, a 32-year old Type 42 destroyer, is about to end her career in the Royal Navy.
The ship arrived on Wednesday. On Thursday, shoppers could witness the arrival of the ship’s Lynx helicopter. The Lord Provost and various guests came on board for a demonstration, and the Band of HM Royal Marines performed Beating the Retreat on the quayside.
Saturday was the big day for shoppers, though: Open Day, when the ship was open to the public all day. Visitors could see the ship from inside and learn all about the business of the Royal Navy. Outside, stands were set up to answer questions and teach all about the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
Being right next to a cruise line terminal undoubtedly has its down sides, but for Ocean Terminal shoppers this turned out to be a great opportunity.
