Metrocentre and Eldon Square Support The Big Sing
Metrocentre and Eldon Square are supporting a great initiative for the fifth year this spring. The Big Sing gives children the chance to learn to sing with access to The Sage Gateshead, a music venue and training center. They can make use of extensive music resources, including training packs and sessions with professional musicians. Teachers also get specialised professional development training so they can better train their students between visits from the musicians.
The students, aged 4 to 16, learn about twenty songs over the course of the spring and early summer. Each year’s focus is different. this year The Big Sing ‘Goes Wild’ and features well known songs such as ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ by Joni Mitchell, ‘Eye of the Tiger’ and Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’. Students practicing Mitchell’s ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ got a special surprise when center managers Tim Lamb and Phil Steele dropped in for a visit in a big yellow taxi of their own to watch a rehearsal.
They’ll be singing the songs at performances at both centres, and then the project will culminate in a special performance at The Sage Gateshead in July where all the schools come together to raise the roof with their singing.
