London’s Elephants on Parade

This summer, there will be elephants on parade in London.

To raise awareness of the plight of the Asian Elephant (a species with as few as 30,000 members left in the wild), London will host Elephant Parade London 2010. 250 brightly painted elephant statues will be placed at prime locations around central London from May to July, and will be auctioned off to support conservation efforts at the end of the show.

This month, Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre has donated empty retail space to the cause. Artists involved in the event are using the space as studios to prepare their elephants. And shoppers get to enjoy the spectacle of seeing one of the unique pieces come together.

Adding fiber optics to the elephants could be very fun. We did for bears in Grants Pass, Oregon.
