Lakeside Keeps a Major Resolution

When Lakeside Shopping Centre committed to undertaking 21 Good Deeds in 2011 (the center’s 21st birthday), it sounded like a lofty goal. But sure enough, the center pulled together staff from throughout its departments to improve the world through 21 great causes.

Many of its good deeds were monetary in nature, providing vital equipment for groups like the Rayleigh Air Training Corps, who badly needed new tents, toys for Thurrock Women’s Aid, and housewares for The Sick Children’s Trust. Some of these donations had a very strong personal effect – for example, the center enabled the Royal British Legion to purchase a brand new boiler for a couple in Walton–on-the–Naze who were down on their luck and would have been completely without heating this Christmas.

But nearly as many of the efforts were hands on. Volunteers from the center went out and to redecorate part of St Luke’s Hospice in Basildon, build a new storage shed for the Tilbury Seafarer’s Association, garden for Little Havens Children’s Hospice in Thundersley, and build a large workshop for Treetops School.

The center also used its event-planning expertise to help out, sponsoring a Look Good…Feel Better workshop at Southend Hospital and an ArtsAdventures workshop, and planning a giant coffee morning to support the local branches of Macmillan Cancer Support.

So kudos to Lakeside, for sticking with its goal and helping out so many people. That’s one way to make your birthday count.
