Kolonnade Centre Celebrates Mandela Day
Last week marked Mandela Day, a day when people worldwide celebrate Nelson Mandela’s fight for social justice with 67 minutes of service. It’s celebrated on the birthday of the former South African president, July 18th.
This is a particularly difficult year for the celebration, with Nelson Mandela still hospitalized and in critical condition. Nevertheless, his 95th birthday would not go unmarked as people worldwide joined in the celebrations with an air of hope.
Kolonnade Shopping Centre brought together two important causes in its Mandela Day celebrations. Reach for a Dream, a foundation that fulfills the dreams of children with life threatening illnesses, came to the center for its own 25th birthday. Alma School, a non-profit that guides and assists children with intellectual and physical disabilities, is celebrating its own 50th anniversary. They came together at the center on Mandela Day.
Center tenants Wakita Spur and Checkers jumped at the opportunity to help and donated 300 meals and sweet packets for the party, and Kolonnade Centre management spent their own 67 minutes volunteering with the youngsters, handing out meals and sweet packets. Some of Wakita Spur’s staff also gave up their days off to help with face painting.
Along with their lunches, sweets and face painting, the children enjoyed a show from Tjiff & Tjaff and ‘Afrikaans is Groot’ singers.
