Happy Halloween
Costume contests and Trick-or-Treating are on the agendas of most malls celebrating Halloween this weekend. With tight budgets all around, big Halloween bonanzas just aren’t in the cards. But some malls are going a bit further to celebrate the spookiest of holidays.
In South Africa, Brightwater Commons is holding a big Halloween bash. On top of its costume contest and trick-or-treating festivities, the shopping center has a great evening of spooky entertainment planned. The opening acts include a magician, ventriloquist, mime and puppeteer. Later in the evening, grown-up revelers will enjoy a pair of hypnotic stage shows with Andre The Hilarious Hypnotist, and Aiden Powers and the Twilight Zone.
In the UK, The Potteries saw a great opportunity with the half term holidays falling on the week leading up to Halloween. The shopping center has been enjoying a week of fun kids’ activities. The “Little Horrors” events include a School of Wizardry, where kids can learn a few fun magic tricks of their own, a fancy dress parade, an animatronic dragon, and arts and crafts. Children can also enter to win a giant spider puppet by collecting spooky stickers from select retailers.
Finally, retailers in San Antonio are trying to make a traditionally wasteful holiday a little greener. Parents are encouraged to drop off gently used costumes at locations offered by a number of retailers for the first annual Halloween Drop & Treat. The costumes will be resold at a local thrift store next year, with proceeds going to charity. With most Halloween costumes getting no more than a single use, this seems like a good way to save some waste.
