GTA Shoppers Create Amex Art

Shopping centers around the Greater Toronto Area helped shoppers unleash their inner artists as part of the Amex Canvas Contest earlier this month.

Canadian actor and comedian Colin Mochrie visited the Bay-Adelaide Centre to promote the contest, which has shoppers creating their own artistic takes on Amex advertisements. The participating shopping centers collected the work shoppers created on location for the contest, and other entrants could create their works on American Express Canada’s Facebook page.

The winning artist will enjoy a trip for two to New York City, and their ad will be featured in the company’s ad campaign. It’s a fun contest for participants, but designers and advertisers are often annoyed by this sort of contest, as it asks participants to create skilled work on spec. Granted, this particular work is done with fairly limited tools. But what would you think about using crowdsourced advertisement as part of your campaigns?
