Greenstone Shopping Centre’s Wheelchair Challenge
South Africa’s Greenstone Shopping Centre took aim at prejudice this weekend with an event that sounds like a ton of fun.
Partnering with a number of nonprofits and advocacy groups, the shopping center held a series of wheelchair races through its halls. First up was a celebrity challenge, which pitted singers, actors, radio personalities, comedians and even a mountaineer against one another in a no-holds barred wheelchair race. This was followed up with a company challenge, which invited companies to enter teams of five to race against one another to raise money needed to cover the cost of new wheelchairs for those identified as being in need.
The center also provided opportunities for companies to sponsor the chairs used in the races.
The event was part of the larger “Challenge the Challenged” awareness campaign, and the center hoped to bring awareness of the broader attitudes and prejudices held about disability in society.
