Graffitigate Hits Westgate With Great Success

Westgate Shopping Centre is set to undergo a massive revamp in just two short months, and as part of that revamp its exterior is being completely repainted. So what did they do with a blank canvas on a tight time limit? Well, let them have paint!

Graffitigate (which is a fantastic name, by the way) involved inviting local street artists and school children to come together and paint freely on one of Westgate’s open walls. Even the youngest were welcome, and were given masonite boards to decorate.

According to Rob Thomas, Westgate’s marketing manager, “The objective of Graffitigate was to create a signature event for the shopping centre whilst engaging with our customers during a fun promotion. Apart from allowing street artists the opportunity to legally spray paint the shopping centre it also allowed us to interact with schools in the area.”

A local paint retailer and construction firm provided 800 cans of spray paint and matching dust masks, and scaffolding was erected to allow would-be artists to reach every inch of the canvas. “The street artists applauded our efforts saying it was a welcome change to have a safe and secure space to express themselves,” said Thomas. “Due to the positive response we received, Westgate is considering finding a spot at the centre where Graffiti artists can spray paint on a regular basis.”
