The Glades Brings a New Batch of Heroes

Beginning Monday, visitors to Glades Shopping Center will take in 25 fantastic creations by pupils from nearby boroughs. As part of the Eco Hero Challenge launched at the Glades last summer, the young students have been hard at work creating model superheroes out of recycled materials.

The stories behind the models are heartwarming, too. Ellie Suffling, a 9-year-old student of Downderry Primary School explains her school’s contribution: “The mammoth died out because of a natural change in climate but now humans are contributing to an unnatural change in climate by using too many plastic bags. Our ‘baggy’ mammoth is standing on an iceberg, also made from plastic bags, that is too small for it, to symbolise how icy habitats are diminishing because of global warming.”

Until the end of the month, the 25 life-sized eco-superheroes will be on display in the shopping center for visitors to enjoy and vote on. Shoppers’ votes will be weighed with the picks of the competition’s judges. The participants from the winning school will be invited to a gala awards dinner to celebrate, and the top 8 models will go with them to be admired.
