Full Figured Fashion Week Takes NYC by Storm

The world of fashion is pretty much all about impossibly tall, impossibly slender women. There was a brief flurry of excitement about plus-size models last year, but it faded quickly – even Crystal Renn, poster woman for plus-size models, has gone down a number of dress sizes since then.

Thankfully, we’re seeing a resurgence, with Vogue Italia recently featuring a plus-size model on the cover and several gorgeous models vying for Renn’s crown. Perfect timing for Full Figured Fashion Week to hit NYC.

The event took place last weekend, for its third year running. It’s not sponsored by the top-end designers that the traditional Fashion Week is, but it fills a very important niche. With such a significant portion of the population looking for attractive, flattering options for plus-size clothing, Full Figured Fashion Week is relevant for a lot of people, and as the event website says, it offers “an opportunity for independent designers to market their collections to a wider audience, and a unique opportunity for plus models to gain more professional exposure on the runway, but also a chance for the media, buyers and the general public to have access to collections that have not received the marketing and publicity they deserve.”

The schedule was packed with exciting events. Runway shows, New York fashion crawls, cruise soirees, receptions, panel discussions and more. Most of the events on the schedule sold out well in advance, so clearly there’s a demand.
