Erin Mills Makes Prom Shine for Lucky Students

Is it prom season already? Time flies, a sentiment that’s surely shared by a few High School seniors right about now. Fortunately, there are plenty of shopping centers doing what they can to make prom time much easier.

Take Erin Mills Town Centre. It’s asking the community and its own retailers to donate current, gently-used dresses and accessories to The Sparkle Project. The project identifies young, local women in need of a helping hand to have their perfect prom and organizes dresses and accessories for them to wear.

“We wanted to create something that people of all ages could participate in to benefit the vibrant youth in our neighbourhoods,” says Tahira Tayyab, marketing coordinator, Erin Mills Town Centre “Many young people work very hard in school and at part-time jobs, even some here at Erin Mills, to help support their families. Prom should be a magical moment for every young woman, regardless of her financial situation.”

The cool thing about The Sparkle Project is that shoppers know their dresses are going to someone local and deserving. School counselors hand-pick girls who may need the project’s assistance, and while they aren’t identified, everyone who donates can rest easy knowing they’re helping out very close to home. As an added perk, every donation means an entry into a draw for a $500 center gift card.

Students whose needs aren’t necessarily financial but perhaps more aesthetic can give the center’s Prom Makeover contest a shot. Three students registered to attend a high school formal or prom will will a full prom makeover. That means a new dress, shoes and accessories, hair and makeup services, and more. They’ll also be making their peers jealous when they get a photo spread in Mississauga life, styling tips from expert fashion consultant Robin Keeler and a chance to appear as a model on CHCH News Hamilton.

To enter, participants need to make a good case for themselves, imaginatively demonstrating why they deserve the chance to win. Judges are looking for creativity, so the more esoteric the entry, the better.
