Eldon Square Zings Art to Life
Eldon Square is in the midst of hosting an amazing art show: Zing (life).
It’s a project organized by Thomas Bewick School, which provides all-age specialist provision in Newcastle upon Tyne for children and young people with autism. For two years, students at the school have been exploring their communities, taking walks in coastal, woodland and urban environments, collecting natural, lost or discarded objects, and gathering sounds and pictures. They then joined forces with children from other local schools to create original works of sculpture, photography, music and more.
The Zing exhibition is the culmination of those two years of hard work. Not only is Eldon Square filled with beautiful works, but the students also kept a photo journal of the process of bringing the exhibition to life. Shoppers can take in creations that include Spirit of the Sea, Woodland Man, Wonky Music Machine, Clive the Urban Man and Dancing Men.
Claire Gladstone, a member of the Creative Arts team at Thomas Beckwick, expressed the school’s joy at bringing the art to the public. “We’re very proud of the artwork produced by our students, and we’re extremely grateful to Eldon Square for giving us this opportunity to stage this exhibition in such a public space, enabling us to showcase this work to a much wider public, who I’m sure will appreciate the hard work and joy involved in producing this exhibition.”
Patsie Beaton, head of operations at Eldon Square, was also impressed. “From the moment I saw the initial pictures of this exhibition I absolutely adored it, and was blown away by the creativity and uniqueness of the project. I’m sure that everyone will admire and enjoy it, and that it will put a ‘zing’ in everyone’s step!”
