Eldon Square has an Early Olympic Moment

It feels like we’re just on the other side of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, and yet it’s almost time for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Time flies, doesn’t it?

But unlike me, London shopping centers aren’t unprepared — they’re all ready to roll out the red carpet for next summer’s athletes. One center, Eldon Square, rolled that carpet out a little early last week for a pair of very special Olympic VIPs: London 2012 Olympic Mascot, Wenlock, and London 2012 Paralympic Mascot, Mandeville.

Our British readers are no doubt familiar with the tale of these mascots. For everyone else, Wenlock and Mandeville were created from the last drops of steel left over from the construction of the final support girder for the Olympic Stadium. They are born of the magic of the games.

Wenlock and Mandeville stopped by Eldon Square to meet with local youngsters. They posed for photographs, shared a few special moments and handed out comics to the little ones.

To celebrate their visit, London 2012 and John Lewis got together to give one lucky winner an exclusive Mascot prize package featuring Wenlock and Mandeville soft toys, colouring books, die-cast vehicles, and more.

Now the mascots are off on their own separate tours, meeting up again on occasion as they travel the country. But their stop at Eldon Square will be an inspiring Olympic memory for many youngsters. Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee, said “the trip to Eldon Square was a great opportunity for shoppers to meet the London 2012 mascots as they make their way to London. With less than a year to go until the Games, we want to inspire and excite as many children and young people as possible.”
