Devonshire Goes to the Net for Heart Health

Devonshire Mall is betting on its shoppers to get their hearts pumping with a good ol’ game of Malleyball.

This is the center’s second year running the Malleyball: Bumps for Beats volleyball tournament. Devonshire Mall is in Windsor, Ontario, a city with the second-highest rate of cardiac illness in Canada. So it put together the tournament both to get shoppers active and moving, and to raise money for a life-saving cause – raising money for the Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital Foundation, who are organizing funds for the construction of a stand-alone Angioplasty Centre.

The tournament is an all-day event in June, and it’s for folks that are serious about the sport – or serious about raising money. Teams must donate a $250 entry fee, and collect a minimum of $50 pledges per team member. Each of the teams is expected to play at least 5 games (or more, of course, if they’re successful). Devonshire Mall is putting up big prizes for the winners to make it worthwhile, though: over $5000 total in center gift cards are up for grabs for the top three teams, the top three fundraisers, and the top three examples of team spirit.

In 2010, the center helped raise more than $16,000 with Malleyball. If it manages to fill out the tournaments with the maximum of 72 teams, it could be looking at raising over $35,000 this year. Let’s wish them success!
