Chinook Centre Holds the Ultimate Energy Challenge

Last weekend, shoppers at Chinook Centre were be witness to something special: the start of the Energy Diet Challenge Urban Energy Challenge. Five families set out to compete in what’s been called the “Amazing Race” of energy, with their eco-knowledge, creativity and speed put to the test.

At the shopping center, the families took their places at booths placed around the mall. They each had to implement a unique, creative marketing campaign to sell energy-efficient products to shoppers passing by. The families competed to sell the most LED lights, flush converters and other products for conserving energy, with proceeds going to the charities of their choice.

The competing families earned a point for every dollar they raised, Facebook “Like” they received and Twitter follower they acquired. After they sold their products, they went off to Rona for the second stage of the challenge, where they completed rooms with energy saving gadgets.

Finally, it was back to the shopping center for the last challenge. Though it was designed as a tie-breaker, that wasn’t needed, so the children took it on. Girls versus boys set up to sort safe trash from recyclables.

The winning family went home with a $4000 eco-appliance prize package. Shoppers, meanwhile, went home with a new appreciation for saving energy and information about the Energy Diet.
