Central Park’s Hipster Santa Goes Global
Sydney’s Central Park positions itself as a different sort of mall, a retail experience “unlike any other.” And of course a mall unlike any other needs a Santa all its own.
Which leads us to Hipster Santa, a young chap aspiring to a Santa-esque beard. Hipster Santa doesn’t invite shoppers to sit on his lap, but he does roam the center taking selfies with them. He has his own Tumblr account, where he documents his life as the hippest of Santas. His workshop is a caged loft. His seat is a hand-woven Pakistani Christmas throne. He doesn’t want cookies and milk—he wants coconut water and a gluten-free macaroon.
His loft contains some of the best gifts for the hipsters on shoppers’ lists, too.
Hipster Santa isn’t just a gentle jab at the more pretentious among us—he’s also super popular. His Instagram account has hundreds of followers. His presences has been noted on news sites from around the world.
CBC offers up some details of the campaign:
“Created by Australian communications agency BMF, Hipster Santa is actually part of an ambient PR campaign designed to promote the new mall and drive business.
The campaign includes outdoor posters, chalk stencils, online image macros and a portion of the mall’s retail space which has been turned into Hipster Santa’s workshop — complete with a “Christmas triangle,” as an alternative to a mainstream fir tree.”
