Celebrating Women, Appreciating Teens

A couple of interesting Canadian shopping center events happened earlier this week.

Aberdeen Centre helds its 3rd Annual Fine Arts Fair on the weekend, with student work from the surrounding school district. By including the performing arts in its art fair, Aberdeen Centre gives shoppers a chance to really take notice of the talents of local youth. Along with elementary school art boards and high school student exhibitions, the shopping center scheduled a list of great talent, including dance teams, jazz bands, choirs, cultural performers, an improv team and a drum circle.

Also, Monday was International Women’s Day, but beyond a few sales and a couple makeover events, we haven’t heard much about malls marking the occasion. City Centre Mall is an exception, with the movie event Half the Sky LIVE. The one night show features on-screen performances by Michael Franti; Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York; and international singers, musicians and artists. The show considers issues that face women around the world, including sex trafficking, education, and maternal mortality among others. Next year is International Women’s Day’s Centenary, so we hope to see more great events to celebrate women worldwide, and to consider how much further there is to go.
