Brightwater Commons Recycles and Rewards

Brightwater Commons has impressed us a few times in recent years with its dedication to the environment and green events and causes. So we’re not surprised that it’s back with another fantastic idea. And that idea being perfectly timed to benefit from the World Cup fever is a lovely touch.

To encourage recycling, the South African shopping center has erected a giant outdoor soccer ball. Shoppers have been asked to bring their scraps of used aluminum foil to fill the ball, with the goal of reaching 750kg of used foil. The shopping center has also approached local schools and businesses to try to meet the goal.

750kg will be enough to get the ball into the South Africa Book of Records for collecting the most recyclable aluminum foil. The record is currently at 732kg. For each deposit of 50g or more, shoppers will be given an entry form for a luck draw. At the end of each month of the three-month competition, the shopping center will draw the name of one lucky shopper who will take home R20,000 (approximately 2600 USD ). Participants will also be entered to win a hybrid car. And the school that collects the most foil will get a cash prize as well.

The record attempt is also a fundraiser for the Lehae La Tshepo Centre, which cares for children in the community. The panels of the giant ball will be sold to advertisers, and when the ball is complete and measured, it will be sold to an aluminum company for scrap. The funds from both these efforts will go to the children’s aftercare centre.
