Botany Town Centre Goes For Breastfeeding Record
This week is World Breastfeeding Week. To raise attention for the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, and for the importance of breastfeeding and support, Botany Town Centre is taking part in a New Zealand-wide record attempt for the number of women breastfeeding simultaneously.
The shopping center will be holding its Big Latch-On event in the Sunset Terrace, a quiet and comfortable location for the attempt. The Big Latch-On starts with a welcome morning tea at 10am, with the record attempt starting at 10:30am at venues around New Zealand. The Sunset Terrace will be filled with mothers collectively breastfeeding their babies in a bid to boost last year’s record, which saw 1,299 women participating nationwide. Participating mothers have a chance to win spot prizes and giveaways and will each take home a beautiful maternity bra.
The sixth annual Big Latch-On 2010 commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Innocenti Declaration, which called for implementation of the Ten Steps in all maternity facilities. Over the past 20 years, more than 20,000 maternities in the world have fully implemented the Ten Steps and have been certified by the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. But now funding is dropping and training is often inadequate which has lead to stagnation, so this is a big year for the initiative.
