Bayside Helps Schools With Better Food

Bayside Shopping Centre is launching its second annual Canteen Rescue, and it’s looking for schools to take part.

The event follows a traditional format: for every dollar shoppers spend, their school of choice earns one point. But here’s a nice touch: the winning school gets money to transform its cafeteria into a sustainable fresh food hub.

With childhood obesity an ever-growing problem, one major solution is change at school. To encourage that change at home, purchases made at fresh food retailers at Bayside earn double points.

Last year, Canteen Rescue was a huge success. Two schools won $40,000 Canteen Rescue packages. 75 schools were awarded cash prizes at the completion of the program, and 210 schools were awarded a weekly prize in recognition of their efforts. Bayside also brought in The Biggest Loser Australia trainers Shannan Ponton and Michelle Bridges to talk at ten of the participating schools. The program brought in nearly $39,000 for its charity partner, the Children’s Food Education Foundation.
