Bay Street Takes On Bullying

405keeganBay Street Emeryville was one of many centers that used its back-to-school clout to host an anti-bullying event late last month, and it had a little help. Actor Keegan Allen of ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” was invited by Director of Marketing Heath McCue to speak to the shopping center’s back to school shoppers.

Keegan spoke to shoppers about the harmful effects of bullying other students and the harm in just watching it happen and doing nothing to stop it. It wasn’t just a lecture, of course—the event took a more light-hearted tone with Keegan holding a meet and greet with fans, the crowds being entertained by the Bay Street DJ, playing the hottest songs for the back to school crowd. Over 2000 people showed up to attend the event and support the cause to fight against bullying.

Bay Street Emeryville also set up a “Stand against Bullying” wall. Shoppers were encouraged to fill out a pledge card to show their support against bullying. Over 500 pledge cards were filled out right away, and more were completed in the days that followed. For each person that filled out a pledge card, the center is donating to The BULLY Project, the social action campaign inspired by the award winning film.

Bay Street also took the fight to local schools by giving out a booklet that contains facts about bullying, to educate students, parents and teachers
