100 Years of Scouting
This weekend was the Annual Scout Expo at malls and fairgrounds across the US. This Monday marked a special milestone — Boy Scouts of America’s centennial.
Scouts visited malls across the country to show off their skills and recruit new youngsters. Thousands of scouts and family members visited Eastview Mall this weekend to celebrate. The scouts showed off a great selection of activities, making rope bridges, bottle rockets and even a canoe.
Oakdale Mall’s expo included booths depicting Troop, Pack, Venturing and Exploring. It wasn’t all self-promotion, either, as Cub Scouts from the local district participated in a pinewood derby competition.
Shore Mall had a special treat for the event. Phil Steel, a former scout that attended the World Scout Jamboree in 1951, donated a collection of scouting memorabilia that he’d traded for at the Jamboree to a local troupe. His collection was displayed at the Shore Mall Scout Expo, and it comprised items from scouting groups in over 30 countries.
