Gateway Snags Pre-Durban July Event

The 2011 Vodacom Durban July is one of South Africa’s hottest racing events of the year, and Gateway Theatre of Shopping snagged the pre-race festivities.

Together with Primedia Lifestyle, the center put together a fantastic event. To start with, shoppers were treated to the Vodacom July Fashion Challenge where competition winners showed off their race day ensembles and competed to have their design featured at the Durban July. The theme for this year’s race is a “Right Royal Affair,” with the recent pair of royal weddings to celebrate and take inspiration from.

The center also welcomed The Arrows, Liquideep, and Lonehill Estate. The Arrows recently picked up two SAAMA awards this year, while Liquideep was selected by MTV as 2010’s Best, Most Downloaded Group and Africa Song Of The Year 2010.

The whole thing was broadcast by 5FM, who recorded their Fresh Drive show live at the center.

A Royal Event at St. Laurent Centre

The Royal Wedding is just around the corner, and excitement is building. Canadian shoppers are excited too, and St. Laurent Centre plans to help them celebrate. Next week, the center is holding the RoyalPartea, a royal wedding preview that benefits the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. It sounds like it’s going to be an amazing opportunity for shoppers.

The event starts with an urban high tea services, provided by Thyme & Again. This will be complemented with sparkling wine and delectable treats to help mark the once-in-a-lifetime occasion. And while it’s not quite the world-famous guards of Buckinham Palace, the event will feel a little more royal with the presence of the Governor-General’s foot guards, who will take part in the proceedings.

The tea will be attended by Jeanne Beker, a Canadian fashion icon, who will offer up the inside scoop on the royal wedding before she jets off to London for the real thing.

As if that weren’t enough, shoppers can also take in a “Walk About” Fashion Show of stunning spring fashions and Kate Middleton-inspired looks from St. Laurent Centre. And each of the attendees will receive unique gift bags with generous donations from well-known center retailers.

The price for this exciting event isn’t cheap – tickets run $250. But proceeds go directly to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.

Be Google’s Valentine?

Google got into the Valentine’s Day spirit this year with Map Your Valentine.

The custom implementation of Google Maps allowed users to create an e-Valentine with a sweet message and send it to loved ones. But first, users could pinpoint a location with special meaning and have it marked in a heart-shaped map. And just like that, Google tied its brand to happy memories – first dates, proposals, first homes, weddings, and probably even a few Valentine’s scavenger hunts.

Your shopping center probably has played host to plenty of special moments in its time. Why not do something similar for your next big center anniversary and get shoppers to reflect on those first meetings at cafes that ended in happy relationships, those times catching up with loved ones, those wedding-dress trips, and all the good times?

Broadway on the Mall wishes us an elegant Christmas

Perhaps we’re easily distracted by lovely things, but Broadway on the Mall’s Christmas gift guide and wish list is just gorgeous.

It houses a gift guide with lots of luxurious ideas for him, for her, for weddings and for personal pampering. It makes us want something extravagant. And if Broadway on the Mall shoppers want something extravagant too, the Australian shopping center is ready to help. Its “Three Wishes” contest lets shoppers fill out an online wish list that they can enter to win, with three prizes of up to $1000 value to be won.

Of course, if your wish list includes a $15,000 engagement ring (which is indeed one of the options), you might have to hope for someone else to leave it under the tree. The fairy godmother’s pockets aren’t quite that deep.

Teaching Style

0702styleagents.gifCanadian shopping center Vaughan Mills has launched another great web promotion with Style Agents. Agents Janette Ewan and Afiya Fransisco star in a web series on fashion trends; topics covered so far include how to mix patterns safely, how to get away with bold colours, and how to keep on budget during a summer full of weddings and social events.

The web series is pretty informative, and Vaughan Mills is doing its best to create a comprehensive social media package to go with it. Each video is accompanied by a blog post from each of the Style Agents. The Agents also have Facebook pages and Twitter accounts that shoppers can follow for more tips, and the videos are available on iTunes as podcasts. And, of course, every aspect of the campaign points back to Vaughan Mills retailers where appropriate.
