Irvine Spectrum Center Does Restaurant Week

227restaurantHungry? No wonder: it’s Orange County Restaurant Week. Or maybe it’s just time for a snack break.

Orange County shopping centers are getting in on Restaurant Week in a big way this year. For one week, the top 100+ restaurants in the city offer prix fixe menus at $10, $15 or $20 for one person for lunch and $20, $30 or $40 per person for dinner. Diners can introduce themselves to the best food the city has to offer without breaking the bank, and they don’t even need to worry about what to order.

A number of Orange County centers have restaurants participating, but two in particular have teamed up with the event for tasty feature spots. Irvine Spectrum Center is noted as offering a Spectrum of Tastes, with five participating restaurants highlighted on the event website. Fashion Island is noted as having Southern California’s Finest Dining on the Coast, and also has five participating restaurants.

Does your city offer a dining event like this? Consider working with participating restaurants to give satisfied diners a reason to spend their dinner savings with your retailers.

Mall of America and Caribou Coffee Get Pinteresting

caribouCaribou Coffee might just have itself a first: the first coffee created on Pinterest. To celebrate claiming that unusual honor, the company took its love of Pinterest even further. It built a larger-than-life Pinterest Board to decorate four storeys of Mall of America.

So how do you make a coffee from Pinterest? You ask your fans to share what inspires them. Then you hand-pick 250 of the best photos and captions of the bunch, and lay them before your Caribou Roastmasters. They work their strange alchemy, and before you know it you have Real Inspiration Blend.

Pinterest tastes like “a sweet and subtle light roast with hints of toasted marshmallow,” apparently.

The display at Mall of America is a mighty one, with photos that inspire and are inspired by Caribou. On the floor are neglected Pinterest pins, giant Caribou cups and samples galore. And if you want to see Real Inspiration in its full, visual glory, the brand has put together a board to represent it online.

The deep sea diving and campfires do look delicious.

Huntington Mall enjoys some tasty treats

1218cookies.gifHuntington Mall in West Virgina, US, enjoyed a feel-good Christmas event last weekend. The shopping center held its Christmas Cookie contest on Saturday, and shoppers were eager to show off their baked goods.

The tasty treats were judged on recipe originality and simplicity, and cookie taste, appearance and presentation. The winners took home gift certificates from shopping center retailers, but it sounds like the judges were the real winners on Saturday. Winning cookies ranged from frosted banana to a more traditional peanut butter chocolate chip.

It may be a simple contest, but imagining my mall filled with the scent of fresh baked cookies makes me hope more of you will be using this idea in the future.

Chadstone's Culinary Celebration

1030chad.gifChadstone, in Victoria, AU, celebrates tasty spring treats this weekend at the Chadstone Festival of Food. On Friday, cookbook author Donna Hay kicks things off by cooking of recipes from her new book, followed by a signing.

This is followed up with a busy weekend of activities. Some of the delicious demonstrations include lessons on cooking for a healthy lifestyle, cooking with fresh produce, baking bread, and cooking pasta. For the more decadent shoppers, there will be wine tasting events, cocktail recipes, and a barista competition.

The festival commemorates the opening of Chadstone’s fresh food precinct, which includes supermarkets, gourmet food markets, and eateries.
