Coquitlam Centre Shoppers Hit the Showcase Showdown


The Price is Right and retail go hand in hand. The game show is all about shopping, after all, finding the best deal and picking the right products. So isn’t it perfect that Coquitlam Centre has partnered with The Price is Right LIVE as it stops in town for five shows.

As part of the partnership, Coquitlam Centre is giving a few lucky shoppers the chance to take in the show. Five of its e-newsletter subscribers will win a pair of tickets to the Price is Right LIVE VIP Experience. That means special seating in the executive suite, drinks, and appetizers. It also means an exclusive meet and greet with host Jerry Springer.

There’s will also be a pair of tickets to be won for each of the shows on the center’s Facebook page. And that’s before the real contest starts: the fight to get picked as a contest and come on down.

Billings Bridge Cozies Up to Shoppers


Is there a better way to spend long winter evenings than curled up at home with your favorite… mall? That’s exactly what Billings Bridge is planning with its Play and Win promotion.

This is a promotion with low overhead and four very important goals: connecting with shoppers on Twitter and Facebook, through its e-newsletter and in the center. To pull it off, Billings Bridge created a scene: a cozy winter evening with a few of its shoppers’ favorite activities.

Center court was set up with a sofa, a television and a mannequin dressed in warm pyjamas. With them were four fun (but relatively simple) prize packs: an OPI nail polish set, the Pirates of the Caribbean Blu-Ray box set and a Snuggie, four of the hottest board games, and an Xbox 360 with the just-released Final Fantasy XIII-2.

Each of these things is part of a picture perfect evening at home alone or with friends, and the center made it easy to enter to win. The nail polish is up for grabs to one lucky newsletter subscriber, the films will go to a Facebook fan, the board games to a Twitter follower, and the priciest prize to someone who goes to the effort of filling out a ballot at the center court display.

A simple concept with straightforward execution, but Billings Bridge really pulled off the details.

Happy Holidays From Us to You


As 2011 comes to a close, we reflect on a year gone by. It was one of upheaval and disruption, of great challenges and many disasters. The global economy stumbles onwards, and retail stumbles with it. But there is also much to celebrate, and a new year to come.

Let’s make 2012 the best year this century has seen. There is every reason to hope for better days, and to be glad for what we have. And we here at Shopping Center Weekly are glad we have you, loyal readers, opening our newsletters and visiting our websites every week. We’re looking forward to another great year ahead. 2012 is the 20th anniversary of our first print publication, Tactics Magazine, so it’s sure to be a big year for all of us.

So merry Christmas to those of you that celebrate, or happy holidays if you prefer. And to all of you, have a safe and happy New Year. Enjoy this, our last newsletter of 2011 – but know that there will be many more to come next year.

Dufferin Mall Releases Its App to the Wild


Dufferin Mall launched a new iPhone app this month, and it’s quite an elegant experience. Along with the basics (maps, promotions, contact information, etc), it has a few nice little additions, including social features; links to the center’s E-Newsletter, job board and gift card balance; and optional alerts whenever a retailer adds a new promotion. Visually, the whole thing is branded like the center’s website for a consistent marketing experience.

But having an app isn’t enough – you need to get it into the hands of your shoppers. So Dufferin Mall put together a great bit of marketing for the app. To help its aggressive promotion of the app in-mall, and on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, it created a QR code that shoppers can use to jump directly to the appropriate App Store page on their iPhones (iPhones don’t include a bar code scanner natively, but there are many free bar code scanning apps available on the App Store). The code was posted on the center’s website, in-mall marketing, Facebook, and linked from Twitter.

The shopping center also offered a contest for the first few weeks after the app’s launch. All shoppers had to do to enter to win a shopping center prize package was download the app and fill out their information on the form within it.

Retail Applications: FastMall


Want to help shoppers find their way around your mall? Consider checking in to FastMall.

FastMall is an iPhone application that’s focused on getting shoppers where they’re going — fast. Using GPS locations and some nice mapping software, the application can help shoppers find exactly what they’re looking for. Need a bathroom, quickly? Shake the app and it brings up the map location of the nearest toilet. But shoppers can also find food, find stores, find deals, and find their cars. And if they want to be social, they can check in at the shops they’re visiting on FastMall, Facebook or Twitter.

Offering deals is a nice selling point for retailers at your shopping center. Much like competitor Point Inside, who we’ve covered in the past, retailers can list time limited sales and offers in the app. Click on the deal, get a coupon. A number of retailers use the application to push newsletter signups, and you could too. You can find out more at the FastMall website.
