Ala Moana Dominates Dining Awards

122haleainaSince 1984 Honolulu Magazine has been holding its annual Hale ‘Aina Awards program, honoring the best in local restaurants. The program was created to recognize restaurants that specifically cater to local tastes rather than those of mainland tourists.

Each category has room for six nominations: three filled in from last year’s top-three winners, one selected by Honolulu Magazine’s food and dining editor, and one reserved for reader suggestions.

This year, Ala Moana Center saw an impressive eight of its restaurants honored in the awards. Center restaurants took Gold in Best Italian, Best Japanese Noodles and Best Business Lunch; Silver for Best Mediterranean and Best Tasting Menu; and Bronze for Best Overall Chinese. They also appeared as finalists in several other categories.

Shoppers visiting the center certainly have a lot of variety (and quality) available for their dining selections.

To celebrate, the center teamed up with Honolulu Magazine to offer shoppers an extra incentive to dine at the winning restaurants. Anyone who posts an Instagram shot from one of them and tags it with #HaleAinaSweeps, @AlaMoanaCenter and @HonoluluMag this month has a chance to win one of four $100 center gift cards.

Several of the winners are also offering free treats for diners that mention #HaleAinaSweeps.

BCSC Opal Awards Approach

The British Council of Shopping Centres has a brand new initiative our British readers may be interested in: The BCSC Opal Awards. The awards aim to promote “the unique and commercial brand opportunities that malls offer by recognizing and showcasing the best examples in the marketplace, encouraging further innovation and creativity.”

You can enter in any of the following four categories:

  • Experiential: engaging consumers with brands, changing brand perceptions and mindsets, and influencing buying behaviours.
  • Media: best campaigns across shopping centre media.
  • Mall Retail: best practice in on-mall retailing for new and innovative retailing options.
  • Innovation: creative new ways that engage with customers, whilst enhancing the shopping experience.

The organization is taking entries for the 2013 awards, and you don’t have much time to get your entries in. December 19 is the deadline for all entries. BCSC encourages joint and collaborative applications, by the way, from centers, retailers, brands and agencies.

Want more detail? You can get the full scoop at the awards website.

Erin Mills Gets Green Award

A bit of good news out of Erin Mills Town Centre: its green efforts have been recognized by the Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada (BOMA).

The center recently won the BOMA Canada’s National Earth Award in the shopping center category. The award recognizes excellence in resource preservation and environmentally sound commercial building management. The center also picked up the regional award for Ottawa on its way to the nationals.

The center was recognized for its hard work in improving its ecological footprint. Some of the steps it has taken include improvements for indoor air quality, green cleaning, and recycling programs. It’s also worked to reduce its environmental risk, to implement a green purchasing policy and improve tenant communications and education. To qualify, the center also needed to possess BOMA BESt certification.

“We are committed to responding to environmental issues that are becoming increasingly important to consumers,” said Nance MacDonald, vice president at Erin Mills Town Centre.” We are delighted to have our efforts recognized with this prestigious award.”

ICSC European Awards Open Up To Established Centers

Have you been tuning out the buzz about the ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards because your center is established and the awards were only open to new and refurbished centers? Well, take another look: established shopping centres can now compete in ICSC European Awards. Hurrah!

The ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards have decided to showcase the changing retail real estate industry landscape by giving established centres the opportunity to show how they are meeting the needs of investors and users and showing the positive economic impact they are having on their local communities. That sounds like many of our readers’ centers to us.

Or maybe you’re providing green value—fostering a greater awareness of the commercial benefits of sustainable development and management in retail centres. There are awards for this too, once called ReSource and ReStore awards, now renamed Green Value and Green Regeneration.

“These new categories reflect the changing nature of the industry and the hard work being done across Europe to ensure that shopping centres continue to meet the needs of the people they serve,” said Jan Eijkemans, managing director of MAB Development and Chair of the 2013 ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards Jury.

Interest piqued? The deadline for submission is just three short weeks away on September 7, 2012, so it’s time to get working. Finalists will be announced in Cannes in November and winners will shine at the ICSC European Conference in Stockholm in April 2013.

The Middle East and North Africa Shopping Centre Awards Are Open

If you’re among our small but growing contingent of readers in the Middle East and North Africa, you should know that the ICSC Mena Shopping Centre Awards are open for submission.

The competition will culminate at RECon Middle East and North Africa, taking place in Dubai from November 11 to 13. The deadline for the awards submission is September 4th, and you can submit them right here. If you’re not familiar (this regional award is fairly new, after all), the awards acknowledge outstanding marketing, retail, design and development of centers in the region.

“ICSC is proud of its tradition of awarding the exceptional ingenuity shown by shopping centres and shopping centre professionals from around the world,” said Michael P Kercheval, president and CEO of ICSC.

“Through last year’s Mena inaugural awards programme ICSC extended that tradition to the Mena region with resounding success, and we look forward to seeing the new and innovative programs that centres in the region instituted over the past year.”

There are two new categories this year, in New Media and NOI Enhancement. There is also an Overall Marketing Campaign in the retail category.

Good luck with your submissions, everyone. You can find out more about RECon and the awards on the event’s website.
