On the Move: Ron Johnson
This isn’t the typical story we’d cover in On The Move, but some stories are just to big to skip. J.C. Penney has announced that it’s hiring Ron Johnson, formerly the senior vice president of retail at Apple Inc, as its next CEO.
Johnson has been in that position at Apple for the last 11 years. In that time, Apple’s retail presence has gone from non-existent to outstanding, as the recent Wall Street Journal coverage of Apple-Store-as-Anchor shows. It will be fascinating to see what he does with J.C. Penney as CEO.
Myron E. Ullman, current CEO at the company, had this to say about his successor. “I am delighted that Ron is joining our Board and the Company, and look forward to working with him as we continue to transform the jcpenney brand. He is widely recognized and highly regarded in the retail industry for his creativity and innovation, his commitment to empowering employees to deliver an unparalleled customer experience, and to making stores exciting places where people love to shop. His tremendous accomplishments at Apple and Target speak to his great consumer merchandising, marketing and operational talent.”
Johnson said, “I’ve always dreamed of leading a major retail company as CEO, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help J. C. Penney re-imagine what I believe to be the single greatest opportunity in American retailing today, the Department Store.”
I can’t wait to see what the Department Store looks like after he has a hand in it, can you?
