Retail Gold Brings Students into Retail

Capital Shopping Centres is celebrating the fifth year of a great program that helps young people interested in business careers get hands-on experience in the retail sector.

Retail Gold is the brainchild of Newcastle Education Business Partnership (NEBP). It launched the project with Capital Shopping Centres, and Eldon Square and Metrocentre have hosted it to the benefit of both retailers and students.

This year’s program includes students from Gosforth Academy and St Robert of Newsminster RC School. They’re taking part in extended work placements at John Lewis in Eldon Square, and shorter placements at House of Fraser, WH Smith and Magic Box at Metrocentre.

The retailers get the benefits of mentoring students who are dedicated to the retail industry, and who will likely return to it after completing the BTEC retail qualification. The students get a chance to have a leg up that comes from understanding the day to day retail experience.

At the end of the Retail Gold program, the students will attend a ceremony at Newcastle Civic Centre to mark their achievements with a series of awards and presentations. It’s the cap of a program that will keep students coming back to the retail industry in years to come.
